Important Info about YOUR ride - Don't get DQ'd!

PLEASE READ: Very important info about YOUR start time.

You will receive a colored number bib to wear that identifies your respective start.

• ULTRA (124 miler)                                                       7:30 a.m. start

• Challenge Century – Age groups 0-49                      7:32 a.m. start

• Challenge Century – Age groups 50 and up            7:34 a.m. start

• Challenge 24, 44, 62 and 84 milers                           7:36 a.m. start

• Chief Ladiga Cruise ride                                            8 a.m. start

NOTE: You MUST start with your age group or be disqualified from qualifying for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship. The UCI uses gun time for the qualifying results; however, we will have timing mats at the start which will show if you start in the incorrect group. You will be disqualified if you start in the incorrect group.

Erwin Vervecken, our UCI contact, explains the use of Gun Time over Chip Time this way: "The UCI principle of gun time is based on the overall UCI race regulations. I’ll give you an example why this is applied: Can you imagine that rider 1 is starting in the back of the peloton and goes over the start carpet 3 seconds later than a competitor (rider 2) in the same age group.  In the end, they both sprint for victory with rider 1 from the back of the peloton winning and rider 2 who started in front arriving in second wheel in wheel with no time difference.  With net time, rider 2 would win although he was beaten in the sprint.  That’s why gun time is applied in all competitive UCI events, also in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series."

HIGHLIGHTED RIDES

Cycling is a great sport, and we are fortunate to have a large number of quality rides in our area. Of course, we love to promote all the rides on the Alabama Backroads Century Series, and we have THREE ABCS rides coming up in April - Cyclepaths Challenge, Tour Autauga, and Tour de Blue. (Details about these rides are on the ABCS link above.)

Another ride that is near-and-dear to us is put on by our friend Billy Ritch.

Check out the Restoration Ride on March 11: https://restorationride.racedirector.com/

In the Anniston area, we have two cycling events taking place in April - The Alabama Cycling Classic (April 7-8) and the Iron Mountain Challenge century ride (April 22).

Two rides that occur close to the same time as the Cheaha Challenge/ULTRA/Cruise ride - and we are all cross-promoting this year - are the Assault on Mount Mitchell (May 15), the week before our ride, and the Ride of Love (May 20), the day before our ride. Do all three and be the King of the Road Bikers!

Check the rides in the list below, and go ahead and sign up for a bunch of them!

Cheaha Challenge Meeting

RE: The 25th Annual Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo Century & ULTRA and the Chief Ladiga Cruise rides – Sunday, May 21, 2017

Let’s be honest, none of us LOVE going to meetings.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE getting everyone together so we can discuss how to keep all the moving parts moving for the Cheaha Challenge/ULTRA/Cruise rides in May, but I am not one to have a meeting for meeting’s sake.

So for this year, I plan to have this one big meeting – Monday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Anniston YMCA! This is for volunteers, directors, coordinators, rest stops, sponsors, NEABA members, …anyone who has an interest in making sure we pull off this year’s event without a hitch! (We will still have a few separate, smaller meetings for specific areas.)

Please let me know you can come. Bring your ideas! Bring your energy! We’ll discuss what’s up for 2017.

See you there –

Brooke

The Cheaha Challenge/ULTRA/Cruise ride is less than 4 months away! Get your ride on.

What's new this year?

BIKEXPO: We are holding our first expo in conjunction with the Challenge/ULTRA/Cruise.

When: Saturday and Sunday, May 20/21 at Pete Mathews Coliseum, JSU

Packet pickup and registration will be taking place at the same time, and the pre-ride party will be at JSU this year, not at Harley Davidson. Click here to view the Schedule of Events.

Want to be a part of our BIKEXPO? Great! Contact Amie Hinton at amiehinton@hotmail.com

JAMFEST: I know you are wondering, "What else is there to do around Jacksonville, AL when I come to the Cheaha Challenge/ULTRA/Cruise ride?" We have the answer, created just for you! Jacksonville State University has created JAMFEST - An arts and music festival - with a slight cycling theme - held on Saturday, May 20 on campus. Find out more by clicking above.

NEED YOUR FEEDBACK: Click here to email me to let me know what you think of this idea - FREE Transport to the Top of AL for family, friends, cheerleaders, etc. We plan to transport from JSU right after the start to the Top of AL (Rest Stop #4). Participants will be returned to JSU after the 12 noon cutoff time for riders leaving Cheaha State Park.

We have always discouraged any vehicles (crew, onlookers, etc.) from going up on the mountain due to safety concerns. We are considering DQ'ing riders who have crew show up, as they are not needed at all. This is a way for your cheerleaders to see you make it to the highest point in Alabama, without risking the safety of other cyclists. Let me know: Like this or not? Will your family/friends want to participate?

Cheaha Challenge Century ride is the 2017 qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships!

We are thrilled to announce our century ride has won the bid to host the 2017 Union Cycliste International (UCI) Gran Fondo World Championship Qualifier for the United States. This is very exciting news for us, as we are the ONLY qualifier in the United States for the HUGE UCI Championship that will be held in September 2017 in France!

This is a big deal not only for our ride, but for Jacksonville and our area and for Alabama, and for the whole Southeastern United States, as we'll draw riders from Europe to our little cycling mecca.

This is what it means to you, our riders:

1. The first 25% of athletes of each age group will be awarded with guaranteed entry to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship in France and be able to ride for the World Champion title. The first three finishers in each age group category will automatically receive entry eligibility.

2. Only the CENTURY riders of the Challenge are eligible to receive this designation.

3. UCI age groups are determined by the cyclist's age on Dec. 31 of that year. (i.e. If you don't turn 50 until August, you would still compete in the 50-54 age group in May.)

25 Years of Challenge!

Life for the Cheaha Challenge/ULTRA/Cruise organizers is exciting right now. Sit back, grab a cold (or hot) beverage and prepare to be amazed. As if holding our 25th annual ride was not thrilling enough, we have LOADS of new options for the 2017 event.

But first, the burning question is, "When is registration going to open for the 2017 ride?"

You're asking, I'm telling. Each year, I try to have registration open in August, but we are going to be delayed a bit this year because - drumroll please - we may have some exciting news to announce that will affect our registration information. FYI: We plan to open registration in October.

The Cheaha Challenge Century ride MAY be a 2017 qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships!

We were invited to bid to host the 2017 Union Cycliste International (UCI) Gran Fondo World Championship Qualifier in the United States. We have completed that bid, and we know we are in the top consideration. BUT they won't announce the qualifier until October. This is very exciting news for us, as we would be the ONLY qualifier in the United States for the HUGE UCI Championship that will be held in September 2017 in Paris!

If we are awarded the bid, which would be a big deal not only for our ride, but for Jacksonville and our area and for Alabama, and for the whole Southeastern United States, as we'd draw riders from Europe to our little cycling mecca.

If we are awarded the bid, here is what it would mean to our riders:

1. The first 25% of athletes of each age group will be awarded with guaranteed entry to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championship in Paris and be able to ride for the World Champion title.

4. UCI age groups are:

MORE INFO TO COME ABOUT THIS EXCITING PROSPECT!

We plan to open registration in October for the 2017 event - Sunday, May 21, 2017.
